Introduction to Willits
Willits is a small town, about 150 miles north of San Francisco that has been
negatively impacted by long-term industrial activities from a centrally-located
plating operation that is now closed (the Abex/Remco facility). For several
years, Barbara Kanegsberg and Ed Kanegsberg have been working with community
residents both in educational activities and in efforts to obtain a clinic
to provide ongoing medical monitoring, psychological support to impacted
individuals, and to evaluate the impact of exposure to multiple industrial
chemicals. The desirability of such monitoring is outlined in a California
State/Federal ATSDR report. There is also support from University of California,
San Francisco. While the potential for local assistance and for globally-applicable
findings is high, the issue for the proposed clinic is quite sensitive;
we will keep you updated.
